The 2024 European Elections mark a golden opportunity for politicians to embrace the potential of the buildings sector to address many of the issues affecting EU citizens while putting Europe firmly on track to achieve its climate goals.
Today, WorldGBC’s European Regional Network (ERN) has launched the European Manifesto for a Sustainable Built Environment. This document, backed by 24 Green Building Councils and seven regional partners, sets out our vision of how sustainable buildings can be at the heart of a prosperous and equitable future for Europe.
In this manifesto, we outline the key policy priorities we call on European leaders to endorse and champion. The manifesto sets out recommendations and incentives across eight policy pillars: Carbon, Circular Economy, Health, Water, Resilience, Finance, Biodiversity and Just Transition. By supporting, establishing and implementing strong policies across these priority areas, European politicians can drive an energy efficient, regenerative and just transition in the built environment.
The enormous opportunities of a sustainable building transition address many of the problems currently faced by the EU, including economic hardship caused by energy price volatility, job shortages, energy poverty and energy security. Transitioning to a sustainable built environment can and should prioritise buildings, especially housing, that are more affordable and healthier, in addition to being more environmentally sustainable.
We call on European policymakers to take on board our recommendations and establish clear and long-lasting policies that support transformative action so that we can work together and realise our sector’s full potential.

Today EU Member States in the Council adopted the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), marking a crucial step towards accelerating #climateaction on buildings.
We are pleased that the new EPBD includes measures to drive the renovation of Europe’s buildings and, for the first time, measures to address the Whole Life Carbon impact of buildings.
WorldGBC and the Europe Regional Network of GBCs and partners look forward to working with national and EU policymakers to implement the provisions of the EPBD and secure a sustainable built environment at the heart of Europe’s future.
